Be the best you can be at Stokesley Sixth Form
Never has the role of a Sixth Form been more important than it is today. In an era when the options available to a school leaver are diverse, inspiring, yet also challenging, a school’s duty is clear: to prepare, advise and guide students so that they can enter the next stage of their life confident and equipped to thrive and progress. The Stokesley Sixth Form experience is designed with this knowledge at its very heart – seeking to prepare young people, both inside and outside the classroom so that they are equipped with the appropriate skills and knowledge and the ability to use them effectively.
School leavers in the 21st century face difficult questions. Do I go to university or not? Should I start work and train in the workplace? Should I take vocational or academic courses? Should I have a Gap Year? How am I going to afford the next stage of my life? Will I get a job? Whatever the choices that are made, one thing is certain; a modern Sixth Form must deliver a programme that is not only academically rigorous, but is also supported by the widest possible range of academic and practical learning qualifications and experiences. It is imperative that students leave school with a portfolio of evidence charting not only their academic ability, but evidencing the skills they have developed, the experiences they have had, and demonstrating their all-round capabilities as a student, employee and citizen.
Stokesley’s whole school motto ἀρετή “being the best we can be” is exemplified in the Sixth Form experience, where students are part of a welcoming and very successful academic community that prides itself on effectively preparing students for the next stages of their lives.
The vast majority of these students progress to competitive university courses, many to Russell Group universities – in fact, Stokesley Sixth Form is one of the two highest non-selective state schools in the North East for the numbers of students gaining places to study at Oxbridge colleges. This is a school with a consistently proud record of student achievement which has been identified by The Sunday Times as one of the top five non-selective state schools in the whole of the North of England and the best performing across the Tees Valley and North Yorkshire region – at both A. level and GCSE.
The 2016 A. level results were outstanding: 66% of all grades were A* to B grades, with 100% pass rate, placing the school in the top 35 of all non-selective state schools nationally –well within the elite 1%. Stokesley Sixth Form College was the top local performing non-selective college for students achieving AAB or higher in at least two facilitating subjects, (the subjects the most prestigious universities prefer). Consequently, the vast majority of students took up places at Russell Group universities to study very competitive courses: six to study Medicine, three to embark on Veterinary Medical courses and three students continued the tradition of successful Oxbridge Stokesley applicants to take up places at Cambridge. Again this year Stokesley Sixth Form students are holding offers from the most illustrious universities, including three students with Oxbridge places.
Very few non-selective state schools can compete with such a record of success at A. Level. It is no surprise therefore that the school is so proud of the glittering performance of its students and the expert tuition, support and guidance provided by its talented cohort of teachers.
Outside the classroom, sixth form students make a very positive contribution to the school – and wider – community, benefiting from the wealth of opportunities to acquire leadership skills as House Captains, Sports Captains, leading activities and supporting the learning of younger students. With impressive sporting, performing arts and entrepreneurial opportunities to boot, students at Stokesley can look forward to a rich, rewarding and successful sixth form experience.
