Stokesley School welcomes Archbishop John Sentamu

Stokesley School was delighted to welcome Archbishop John Sentamu on Friday 24th. March. The Archbishop enthralled an audience of staff and Year 11 and Sixth Form students during his introductory talk and subsequent Q & A session.

Archbishop Sentamu described in moving detail his personal and spiritual journey which included his own traumatic experiences during the rule of the Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin.

The students’ questions were interesting and incisive covering a diverse range of topics from the political to the theological. They included an analysis of the role the church has to play in today’s society, the relationship between politics and religion and whether it is still appropriate for Anglican bishops to exercise political influence through their seats in the House of Lords.

Everyone was fascinated by Archbishop Sentamu’s accounts of his meetings with other charismatic world leaders notably visiting Auschwitz with the Dalai Lama and his discussion with Nelson Mandela. The whole experience was inspiring for both staff and students alike.
